5 Days Nyungwe Chimps & Congo Gorilla Trekking

This tour offers you an opportunity to track chimps in Rwanda and trek through the low land forests of Congo to see the low land gorillas. The trip experience, is crowned by a visit to the Lwiro primate sanctuary to see hundreds of orphaned primates.This trip will also give you a chance to experience life in two different countries and glance at their different natural features.

Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to Nyungwe Forest.

In the morning, you will be picked from Kigali and transfer southwards to Nyungwe Forest NP. En route stops at the King’s palace Nyanza may enrich you with knowledge about how ancient kings of Rwanda lived, while a stopover at Butare National Museum will give you a glimpse of Rwanda’s natural history. You will then proceed to Nyungwe Forest NP, reaching in the late afternoon. Overnight at Gisakura guest house (budget)/ Emeraude Kivu lodge (deluxe/luxury)/ One and Only Nyungwe house (high end)

Day 2: Chimp tracking and afternoon Canopy walk

In the morning, you will be transferred to the park headquarters at Uwinka for briefing and proceed to track chimps. The time one takes to find these primates is not specific and depends on one’s luck and the movement of these animals on a particular day. Once you catch up with them, you will be allowed a maximum of 1hr to observe and take photos before returning to your lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, you will go for a canopy walk to catch the spectacular views of the forest from high above and later return to your lodge. Overnight at day 1

Day 3: Transfer to Bukavu in Congo via Kamembe border post

In the morning, you will transfer to the Congo border in Kamembe where your Congo guide will pick you up from and transfer you to Bukavu. Overnight and dinner at Panorama hotel.

Day 4: Lowland gorilla tracking and visit Lwiro sanctuary

 Congo gorilla safariIn the morning, you will be driven to the Kahuzi Biega NP headquarters for briefing before proceeding to track the low land gorillas. Once you catch a glimpse of them, you will be allowed to stay with them for not more than 1hr and later return to your hotel for lunch. In the afternoon, visit the nearby Lwiro Primates rehabilitation center to see the orphaned primates that include chimps and other monkey species. You will tour the facility and learn about the conservation work being done there before returning to your hotel. Overnight and dinner at Panorama hotel.

Day 5: Transfer back to Kigali

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the border by your Congo guide and proceed to Kigali with your Rwanda guide.

  • Mandatory hand washing
  • Mandatory face masking
  • Keep a distance of 2 meters away
    • Before boarding your plane, you will be required to show your covid 19 negative test results which should be valid for not more than 72hrs (applies for both Rwanda and Uganda)
    • Also you are supposed to fill a locator form (link below) which you will also be asked before boarding (failure to have it, you will be denied boarding)

    • Once you arrive in Kigali, you will take another covid 19 test and be in self quarantine at any of the chosen hotels in Kigali for 24hrs as you wait for your covid 19 test results

    You will then start your tour after your results have returned and you are proved negative

    • These results expire every after 72hrs, hence if your tour is still going on, you will need another test to allow you enter any other park or do any other activity after 72hrs of your test. (This applies to Rwanda only, not Uganda)
    • Before departure from Rwanda or Uganda, you need to do another covid 19 test not more than 72hrs before your departure as you will be required to present your results before boarding your departure flight.
    • While on your tour, you are advised to carry your masks and maintain social distance whenever you are in the public
